چکیده

Memory based learning keeping full memory of learning material appears a viable approach to learning nlp tasks and is often superior in generalisation accuracy to eager learning approaches that abstract from learning mate rial Here we investigate three partial memory based learning approaches which remove from memory speci c task instance types estimated to be exceptional The three approaches each implement one heuristic function for estimat ing exceptionality of instance types i typi cality ii class prediction strength and iii friendly neighbourhood size Experiments are performed with the memory based learning al gorithm ib ig trained on English word pro nunciation We nd that removing instance types with low prediction strength ii is the only tested method which does not seriously harm generalisation accuracy We conclude that keeping full memory of types rather than tokens and excluding minority ambiguities ap pear to be the only performance preserving op timisations of memory based learning

The effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on collocation processing in learners of English

Much interest has recently been directed toward the knowledge of collocations in the field of second language learning since they have been asserted to improve fluency. The current study was intended to examine the effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on the processing of collocations using a Self-Pace Reading Task (SPRT) and relevant working memory tasks. To this end, partici...

Evaluating the Success of the Visual Learners in Vocabulary Learning through Word List versus Sentence Making Approaches

Thisstudy sought to evaluate the learners' achievements with the visual learning style when exposed to the sentence making and word list approaches. On that account, 45 basic level participants who studied at the Iran Language Institute (ILI), Bushehr, took part in this research study. At the outset, the learners were given Barsch learning style inventory (1991) to determine the learners' learn...

Word Type Effects on L2 Word Retrieval and Learning: Homonym versus Synonym Vocabulary Instruction

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to assess the retention of two word types (synonyms and homonyms) in the short term memory, and (b) to investigate the effect of these word types on word learning by asking learners to learn their Persian meanings. A total of 73 Iranian language learners studying English translation participated in the study. For the first purpose, 36 freshmen from an ...

Word pronunciation can be learned by inductive machine learning algorithms when it is represented as a classiication task: classify a letter within its local word context as mapping to its pronunciation. On the basis of generalization accuracy results from empirical studies, we argue that word pronunciation, particularly in complex spelling systems such as that of En-glish, should not be modell...
